Preparing / Priming Surfaces for Creative Projects

IS PRIMING IMPORTANT?

Priming is definitely an important step in any art and crafts project -

  1. It lays the foundation for vibrant and long-lasting creations.

  2. Enhances durability and adhesion

  3. Enhances aesthetic appeal and bring out vibrancy of colors.

  4. Prevents colors from sinking in, esp in canvas and fabrics.

Priming can be done on almost any surfaces - MDF, wood, canvas, fabrics, walls and so on.

I mostly use acrylic paint for MDF, canvas and fabrics to give smooth surface texture and help subsequent coats of paint adhere without any issues.

However, if you want to give more texture to any surface, you can use gesso as well.

IS PRIMING NECESSARY?

As per my experience, it completely depends on the requirement of your project.

For example, if you want to put light paint over dark fabric then it becomes crucial to prime the fabric first.

For some projects, where you want to do color blending, then priming might not be required.

Do let me know if you have any tips or experiences with priming that has helped you bring in better results to your artworks. Would love to hear from you all too :)

Happy crafting and painting!!
